Translation:

My soul thirsts for You, my flesh longs for You.
[Psalms 63:2]

Oh, you foolish merchant! Why do you travel to the marketplace? You do not buy, nor do you sell... You only stir up trouble!

On the eve of Simchat Torah, 5718 [1957], before dawn, when the Rebbe taught this Niggun, he explained:

“This Niggun was a well-known Chassidic melody in Ukraine. The first stanza is sung to the words ‘My soul thirsts for you...’, and the second refrain rhyming Russian lyrics, ‘Oh, you foolish merchant...’

“The World is called a ‘market-place’, A place of commerce and business dealings. Now, the objective of commerce is to earn profit, as the Talmud rhetorically asserts, ‘ just anyone who can buy and sell deserves to be called a businessman?’ Similarly, the purpose of the soul’s descent to this world is not merely that it leave the world as it entered. Rather, there must be profit earned it from the descent, as the purpose of the descent is to ascend even higher. There ought to be a return on this investment, so to speak.

“Yet, the evil inclination and animals so, which is called a ‘fool,’ Also travels to the marketplace in order to tempt and frustrate the person, thereby creating dissension and discord between Jews, and hence, between the Jewish people and our Father in heaven. Thus we asked him, ‘Why have you come to the marketplace? You don’t buy... You only stir up trouble!

“So we sing with the words ‘My soul thirsts for you...’ in the first stanza. For as a result of being beleaguered by the evil inclination’s temptations, the person experiences a great thirst and longing for G-dliness. In fact, this is the true inner purpose for which G-d created us with an evil inclination, to arouse us to an intensified longing for G-dliness.”
