The sounds of Modzitz reverberated through the streets of Boro Park this Motzei Shabbos, CholHamoed Sukkos 5782.

Emanating from the sukkah of R’ Aaron Orlander, who is among the most knowledgeable exponents of the Modzitz repertoire living today, dozens of voices came together to sing majestic nigunim from the famed Hasidic dynasty.

This year’s Sukkos kumzitz was particularly noteworthy for its inclusion of several longer and deeply powerful nigunim, many of which were new to most in attendance.

These intricate and nuanced pieces develop melodic ideas over multiple musical sections, and have a depth of beauty that was felt by all who were in the sukkah that evening. Co-led by R’ Dovid Bick—who, like R’ Orlander, is an authority on the repertoire with a beautiful and skilled voice—the evening was a joyous and meaningful infusion of music into zman simchaseinu.

The evening was both supported and elevated by the skilled pianist Dov Lenchevsky, and musical contributions were offered by several other attendees, including ethnomusicologist Gordon Dale.
